Three 20th-Century Discoveries. One 7th-Century Sentence.

Surah Al-Anbiya · 21:30
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ
"The heavens and the Earth were meshed together then We ripped them apart. And We made from water every living thing."

In 1927, Georges Lemaître proposed the Big Bang. In 1964, Penzias and Wilson confirmed it with cosmic microwave background radiation. In 1998, dark energy was discovered the force tearing the universe apart. The Quran described all three in a single sentence more than 1,000 years before the first of them was proposed.

This lesson breaks down each word. رَتْقًا (ratq) describes the singularity. فَتَقْنَاهُمَا (fataqna) describes not an explosion but a tearing of fabric the precise mechanism of dark energy. مِنَ الْمَاءِ (from water) describes the basis of all biology.

Exercise 1 of 3 · The Words

Two Precise Words Two Precise Events

The Quran uses two very specific Arabic words in 21:30. Watch both in real time:

رَتْقًا
Ratq
Tight, compact, sealed together like fabric so tightly woven it forms one mass
→ The Singularity
+
فَتَقْنَاهُمَا
Fataqna
Tearing cloth by pulling its fabric in opposite directions a stretching tear
→ Dark Energy

What was the state of the universe described by رَتْقًا (ratq) before creation?

A
Extremely hot a fireball of energy
Heat is a property, not a description of how matter is arranged
B
Tight and compact all matter sealed into a single compressed mass
Ratq is the Arabic word for stitched-shut, sealed fabric everything in one inseparable point. The Big Bang singularity.
C
Spinning rapidly at high speed

Exercise 2 of 3 · Three Discoveries

One Verse. Three Scientific Bombshells.

Quran 21:30 contains three distinct scientific discoveries each confirmed by a different field of science in a different century. Watch them reveal:

1
رَتْقًا
The Big Bang Singularity
The heavens and Earth were a single compressed mass the singularity. Before creation, all matter and energy occupied one infinitely dense point.
Confirmed: 1927 (Lemaître) · 1964 (Penzias & Wilson, CMB radiation)
2
فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا
Dark Energy Spacetime Tearing Apart
Fatq means tearing fabric by pulling in opposite directions not an explosion. Dark Energy stretches spacetime itself. Every point in the universe is moving away from every other point.
Confirmed: 1929 (Hubble, expansion) · 1998 (accelerating expansion, Nobel Prize 2011)
3
مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ
Water Is the Basis of All Life
"We made from water every living thing." Every living cell is primarily water. Finding liquid water on a planet is now the first indicator in the search for extraterrestrial life.
Confirmed: 19th–20th century (cellular biology, astrobiology)

These three discoveries span multiple centuries of science. Which was confirmed MOST RECENTLY?

A
The singularity everything once compressed into one point
Proposed 1927, confirmed 1964 by cosmic microwave background radiation
B
Water-based life all living things require water
Established through cellular biology in the 19th and early 20th centuries
C
Dark Energy the accelerating expansion of spacetime
Discovered 1998 by Riess, Perlmutter, Schmidt. Nobel Prize Physics 2011. Still unexplained.

Exercise 3 of 3 · The Precision

فَتَقَ Is Not "Explosion." It Is "Tearing Fabric."

Arabic has many words for separation. The Quran chose فَتَقَ specifically the word for tearing cloth by pulling its threads in opposite directions. Watch the difference in real time:

Why this matters: An explosion pushes matter through space. Dark Energy does not move matter it stretches the fabric of spacetime itself, so that every point moves away from every other point simultaneously. This is precisely what فَتَقَ describes: a tear where both sides are pulled apart, not a blast where fragments fly outward.

The word فَتَقْنَاهُمَا (fataqnahuma) best describes which force?

A
Gravity pulling matter together
Gravity does the opposite of fatq it compresses, not tears apart
B
Dark Energy stretching the fabric of spacetime in all directions simultaneously
Every point in the universe moves away from every other. Not matter flying through space but space itself expanding. Exactly what fatq describes.
C
Nuclear fusion energy radiating outward from a star

One Verse. Three Fields. Three Centuries.

كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا

0
CE Big Bang confirmed (CMB radiation)
0
CE Dark Energy confirmed (Nobel Prize 2011)
A 7th-century merchant who could neither read nor write described the singularity, the mechanism of Dark Energy, and the biochemical basis of life in a single sentence of 16 words.
Discovery 1 · The Singularity
رَتْقًا
Ratq
tight, sealed, compressed into one
=
Big Bang Singularity
all matter in one infinitely dense point
Confirmed 1964
Discovery 2 · Dark Energy
فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا
Fataqna
tearing fabric by pulling in opposite directions
=
Dark Energy Expansion
spacetime fabric stretched apart
Confirmed 1998
Discovery 3 · Water-Based Life
مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ
Min al-ma' kull shay' hay
from water every living thing
=
Water-Based Biology
all cells require liquid water
Confirmed 19th–20th c.
The word fatq is not accidental: Arabic has simpler words for "separation" or "opening." The Quran chose fatq the word specifically for tearing fabric by pulling its threads in opposite directions. This is not metaphor. This is the precise description of how Dark Energy works: it pulls the threads of spacetime apart. The word was chosen 1,400 years before physicists understood what it described.
