Lesson 53 · Cosmology

The Universe Is Expanding. The Quran Said So First.

Surah Adh-Dhariyat · 51:47
وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
"And the heaven We built it with craftsmanship, and indeed We are expanding it."

In 1916, Albert Einstein published his Theory of General Relativity. His equations showed a universe that must be either expanding or contracting. He didn't believe that, so he added a fake term the cosmological constant to force the equations to produce a static universe. He later called it his greatest blunder.

In 1929, Edwin Hubble confirmed it: every galaxy is moving away from every other galaxy. The universe is expanding. Einstein retracted his cosmological constant immediately. The Bible had described the sky as "hard as a mirror of cast bronze" (Job 37:18) a rigid, static firmament. Einstein trusted that. The Quran had said the opposite 1400 years earlier.

Exercise 1 of 3 · The Word

One Word. Present Tense. Ongoing.

لَمُوسِعُونَ
لَ
Indeed / truly
مُوسِعُونَ
Expanders (active plural)
وسع
Root: to expand / widen
The verb is present continuous not past tense ("We built"), not future tense. It means "We are currently expanding it." Modern cosmology confirms the expansion is ongoing today, accelerating due to Dark Energy. The tense is not accidental.

The word لَمُوسِعُونَ in Quran 51:47 means:

A
We have built it (past tense)
The Quran already said that with بَنَيْنَاهَا earlier in the same verse
B
We are expanding it (present continuous)
Active participle from root وسع an ongoing action happening right now
C
We will expand it (future tense)

Exercise 2 of 3 · The Blunder

Einstein assumed the universe was constant. He Was Wrong by 10¹²⁰.

Three sources made claims about the nature of the universe. Only one got it right:

Bible · Job 37:18
"Hard as a mirror of cast bronze" a rigid, static sky
~400 BCE
✗
Einstein · 1916
Added cosmological constant λ to force a static, non-expanding universe
1916 CE
✗ "Biggest blunder"
Quran · 51:47
لَمُوسِعُونَ "We are expanding it" present continuous
610 CE
✓ Confirmed 1929
The scale of Einstein's error: By trusting the Bible's static universe and adding the cosmological constant, Einstein's predicted value for vacuum energy was off from the observed value by a factor of 10¹²⁰ one followed by 120 zeros. Physicists call this the worst prediction in the history of science.

What did Einstein add to his equations to produce a static, non-expanding universe?

A
The Hubble constant
Hubble later proved expansion he was on the right side
B
The cosmological constant (λ)
A fake repulsive term added to cancel gravity and produce a static universe. He retracted it in 1929 and called it his greatest blunder.
C
The speed of light constant

Exercise 3 of 3 · Dark Energy

Something Is Pushing the Universe Apart and We Don't Know What It Is

In 1998, three astronomers discovered that the expansion of the universe is not slowing down it is accelerating. Something is pushing galaxies apart with increasing force the further they are from each other. They called it Dark Energy. They won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. To this day, nobody knows what Dark Energy is.

What we know about Dark Energy: It makes up approximately 68% of the universe. It has a repulsive effect opposite to gravity. The further apart two galaxies are, the stronger it pushes them. It is causing the universe to expand at an accelerating rate. Beyond that silence. The greatest open question in physics.

What is currently causing the universe to expand at an accelerating rate?

A
Gravity pulling matter outward
Gravity is attractive it pulls matter together, not apart
B
Dark Energy a mysterious repulsive force whose nature is still unknown
Discovered 1998. Nobel Prize 2011. Comprises ~68% of the universe. Scientists still cannot explain what it is.
C
The initial momentum of the Big Bang alone
The Big Bang's momentum would cause expansion to slow down over time, not accelerate

وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

"And indeed, We are expanding it."

0
CE Hubble confirmed expansion (1319 years after the Quran)
0
CE Dark Energy discovered. Expansion accelerating.
The Bible said static. Einstein assumed the universe constant and called his cosmological constant his greatest blunder. The Quran 1400 years before Hubble said the universe is currently, actively expanding.
Three independent failures vs one correct statement:

Every pre-modern source that addressed the structure of the universe assumed it was static. The Greek model was static. The Biblical model was static. Einstein the greatest physicist in history assumed it was static and spent years trying to make his equations confirm it. He was wrong. The Quran used a present-continuous verb to describe ongoing expansion in a sentence that every literate 7th-century Arab would have read without understanding its cosmological implication.
Dark Energy makes it more remarkable: The Quran does not say "We expanded it" (past tense). It says "We are expanding it" present, ongoing, active. In 1998, astronomers discovered the expansion is not just ongoing but accelerating, driven by a force Dark Energy that makes up 68% of the universe and whose nature remains completely unknown. The most precise word the Quran could have used was exactly the word it used.
