The Ear That Knocks You Out

1,400 years ago, ears were understood to do one thing: hear sounds. Nobody knew that the inner ear also controls your entire sense of balance and consciousness. Yet the Quran described it precisely.

Quran 18:11
فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰ آذَانِهِمْ فِي الْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَدًا
"Then We struck upon their ears in the cave for a number of years."

The People of the Cave appear awake to observers eyes open, bodies intact yet cannot be roused. The Quran says God "struck their ears." A boxing punch to the ear causes the same: complete unconsciousness that no sound can break. Normal sleep is broken by any noise. A knocked-out person is not.

Exercise 1 of 3

The People of the Cave could not be woken even though they appeared alive. What does "We struck their ears" describe?

A
Their eardrums ruptured, so they heard nothing and stayed asleep
B
Their ears were covered by divine silence to block external sounds
C
The inner ear was struck, causing deep unconsciousness like a knockout impossible to wake from sound alone

Exercise 2 of 3

Anatomy of the Internal Ear showing cochlea and semicircular canals
Inner ear anatomy: cochlea (hearing) + 3 semicircular canals (balance) Cranial Nerve VIII

According to modern science, what does the inner ear control besides hearing?

A
Taste perception and smell sensitivity
B
Balance static balance (sensing gravity) and dynamic balance (sensing acceleration and rotation)
C
Vision focusing and depth perception

Exercise 3 of 3

How many semicircular canals does the inner ear contain each sensing rotation in a different plane of space?

A
1 one canal for all rotational motion
B
2 one for horizontal, one for vertical
C
3 anterior, posterior, and lateral canals covering all three axes of 3D space

The Ear Controls Everything

Semicircular Canals
1,400 years before neuroscience mapped the vestibular system, the Quran described "striking the ears" as the mechanism of sustained unconsciousness. People at the time understood ears only as hearing organs. The idea that a blow to the ear not a blow to the head, not a sedative could render someone unconscious for years was unknown.

The inner ear contains three semicircular canals that detect rotational acceleration in all three planes of space. Disrupting them causes vertigo, loss of balance, and loss of consciousness exactly what "we struck their ears" physiologically describes.
Wikipedia · Ear · 2019
"Providing balance, when moving or stationary, is also a central function of the ear. The ear facilitates two types of balance: static balance, which allows a person to feel the effects of gravity, and dynamic balance, which allows a person to sense acceleration."
