Lesson · Mountains as Pegs

Quranic Numerics · Mountains as Pegs

The Quran called mountains "pegs" a word implying deep underground roots 1,400 years before geologists discovered that mountains extend hundreds of kilometres below ground.

78:6–7 Surah An-Nabaʾ · The Announcement
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا ۝ وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
"Have We not made the Earth a resting place, and the mountains as pegs?"
أَوْتَادًا
awtādān pegs / stakes driven into the ground
=
250
km deep Himalayan mountain roots (2010 study)

A peg is an anchor: a small visible tip above ground and a much longer shaft driven deep below. The Quran chose this exact word for mountains. Geologists in 2010 confirmed that the Indian plate was forced 250 km down into the mantle beneath the Himalayas roots more than 28 times deeper than Everest is tall. The word أوتادًا captures this structure precisely.

See how the peg analogy changes our picture of what a mountain is.

The Arabic word أَوْتَادًا (awtādān) means pegs or stakes. When you drive a tent peg into the ground, where is most of its length?

A
Visible above the surface
The peg's main structure is the part you can see
B
Driven below the surface
Most of a peg's length is underground that's what anchors it
C
Evenly split above and below
Half above ground, half below balanced for stability

Mount Everest stands 8.8 km above sea level. Watch how deep its root goes.

8.8
km above surface
250
km root below surface
28×
deeper than it is tall
Live Science (2010): "The larger Asian plate forced the Indian plate deep into the mantle sinking it at least 155 miles (250 km) down under the surface." This is exactly what a peg looks like a small tip visible, the structure driven deep below.

Why do mountains have such deep roots? What geological process creates them?

A
Underground rivers carve cavities that mountains sink into
Erosion creates hollow spaces below mountain bases
B
The mountain's mass depresses the crust into the mantle below
Heavy crust sinks into the denser, softer mantle like an iceberg floating, most of the mass is submerged
C
Volcanic pipes bring molten rock up, forming pillars below
Magma channels harden into deep columns under mountain bases

Mountains extend up to 250 km below the surface exactly like pegs. The Quran used that word 1,400 years before geologists had instruments to verify it.

Quranic word for mountains in 78:7 أَوْتَادًا
Translation of أوتادًا Pegs / stakes
Mount Everest height above sea level 8.8 km

Ratio: root depth to mountain height ≈ 28×
Mechanism Isostasy (crust floating on mantle)
The precision of the word: Arabic has many words for mountain. The Quran specifically chose أوتاد pegs. This word is only accurate if mountains have a large hidden structure below the surface, which was completely unknown in the 7th century. Seismology and the theory of isostasy only emerged in the 20th century.
"And the mountains as pegs" the single most accurate description of mountain structure in any 7th-century text.
A tent peg is mostly underground. A mountain's root can be 28 times deeper than its visible height. No ancient geographer, cartographer, or natural philosopher described mountains this way because they had no way to know.
