Lesson · Prime Numbers

Quranic Numerics · Mathematics

The Quran's opening chapter has three measurable properties. Every single one is a prime number.

Surah Al-Fatiha Chapter 1 · The Opening
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ  ·  الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds." The chapter Muslims recite in every prayer, 17 times daily.

7, 29, and 139 are all prime numbers

A prime number is divisible only by 1 and itself it cannot be broken into smaller equal parts. Al-Fatiha's verse count, word count, and letter count are each independently prime. The word "Allah" appears exactly 2,699 times in the entire Quran also prime. And the total letter count of the Quran: 326,159 prime too.

Al-Fatiha has 7 verses, 29 words, and 139 letters. What do all three numbers have in common?

A
They are all odd numbers
Not divisible by 2
B
They are all prime numbers
Each is divisible only by 1 and itself cannot be split evenly
C
They are all multiples of 7
Related to the verse count

Tap each property of Al-Fatiha to verify it's prime then discover the full Quran's count.

7
Verses in Al-Fatiha
✓ Prime
7 ÷ 1 = 7  ·  7 ÷ 7 = 1  ·  No other divisors
29
Words in Al-Fatiha
✓ Prime
Not divisible by 2, 3, 4, or 5 only by 1 and 29
139
Letters in Al-Fatiha
✓ Prime
Not divisible by anything from 2 to 11 only by 1 and 139

Add or remove even one letter anywhere and this stops being prime.

The Quran has 326,159 letters a prime number. Why is this especially hard to explain by chance?

A
Large numbers are often prime
So it's not surprising for any large text
B
The author planned it mathematically
Someone calculated the letters while writing
C
Five independent counts are all prime
Verses, words, letters of Al-Fatiha + "Allah" count + full Quran letters each a separate prime

PropertyCountPrime?
Verses in Al-Fatiha 7 ✓ Prime
Words in Al-Fatiha 29 ✓ Prime
Letters in Al-Fatiha 139 ✓ Prime
Occurrences of "Allah" in the Quran 2,699 ✓ Prime
Total letters in the entire Quran 326,159 ✓ Prime
What "indivisible" means here: A prime cannot be split into equal groups it only divides by 1 and itself. The word "Allah" cannot be broken up. The Quran describes itself in 39:23 using the word Mathany (paired / repeated), and Quran 15:87 calls Al-Fatiha's 7 verses by the same word. In mathematics, the group those numbers both belong to is the primes.
The preservation argument: Because 326,159 is prime, the total letter count is exquisitely sensitive. Add or remove a single letter anywhere in the Quran and the count shifts breaking the prime property. This is a built-in integrity check that was not discovered until modern times, yet the count has held since the 7th century.
Every structural number of Al-Fatiha is prime. The name of God is prime. The book itself is prime. A 7th-century text encoded properties that require 21st-century number theory to fully appreciate.
Primes were not formally studied until the ancient Greeks, and a complete theory of prime distribution wasn't developed until the 19th century. The Quran's prime structure was identified using modern computational tools applied to a text fixed 1,400 years ago.
