Quran 96:1–5 · Surah Al-Alaq First Revealed Verses
"Read: In the Name of your Lord who created. Created man from a leech. Read: And your Lord is the Most Generous. He who taught by the pen. Taught man what he never knew."
Prewired at Birth
The very first word ever revealed in the Quran is اقْرَأْ "Read." The passage describes creation from a leech (before birth), then immediately: taught to read by the pen. The sequence implies the capacity for reading was given before birth.

For 1,400 years this seemed like a spiritual command. Then neuroscientists scanned newborn brains and found something extraordinary: the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) the brain's reading center is already connected to the language network at birth, before any exposure to words. The human brain is born prewired to read.

What was the very first word ever revealed in the Quran the opening word of the first verse?

A
بِسْمِ
"In the name of" opening of the Basmala
B
اقْرَأْ
96:1 · Surah Al-Alaq · First Revelation
"Read" the first word revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the Cave of Hira. Not "believe," not "worship" but "Read."
C
الْحَمْدُ
"Praise" opening of Surah Al-Fatiha

Neuroscientists scanned newborn brains. What did they find about the brain's reading center the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA)?

A
The VWFA is blank at birth and only develops connections to language after years of reading practice
B
The VWFA does not exist at birth it forms entirely through education between ages 4 and 7
C
The VWFA is already connected to the brain's language network at birth before any exposure to words. Newborns are born prewired to see and process written language.

Quran 96 says: "Created man from a leech taught by the pen." What does the sequence of these phrases imply, in light of the VWFA discovery?

A
Nothing "taught by the pen" is a spiritual metaphor and has no connection to neurological prewiring
B
The verse first describes creation at the embryonic stage (alaq = leech), then immediately states God taught reading by the pen implying reading capacity was built into humans at the point of creation, before birth. This matches the VWFA finding exactly.
خَلَقَ الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ · الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ
96:2–4 · Created from leech → taught by the pen
C
The verse describes two separate people one created from a leech, another person who was taught to read

"Humans are born with a part of the brain that is prewired to be receptive to seeing words and letters, setting the stage at birth for people to learn how to read… Even at birth, the VWFA is more connected functionally to the language network of the brain than it is to other areas. It is an incredibly exciting finding." Zeynep Saygin, senior author
For 1,400 years, scholars read "اقْرَأْ Read" as a divine command. Nobody thought it said anything about biology. The conventional belief was that reading is a skill acquired years after birth a product of education, not nature.

In 2020, Ohio State University neuroscientists published MRI scans of newborn brains. They found the Visual Word Form Area the brain region responsible for reading is already functionally connected to the language network at birth. Before the infant has seen a single word. Before any language exposure. The reading circuit is installed before birth.

Quran 96 opens: "Created man from a leech" (embryonic stage) → "taught by the pen" (reading, before birth). The verse that commanded an illiterate man to "Read" described the neurological prewiring of the human brain 1,400 years before it was discovered.
