Lesson · Age of Universe

Quranic Numerics · Cosmology

The Quran says Earth existed for 2 out of 6 creation days. Science measures Earth at exactly one third the age of the universe.

Quran 7:54 + 41:9 Creation timeline

The universe is 13.8 billion years old. Earth formed 4.54 billion years ago. That places Earth at exactly one third of the universe's age 4.54 ÷ 13.8 = 0.329. The Quran states this in a different way: the whole of creation (heavens, Earth, everything between) took 6 days measured at God's Throne, while Earth itself existed for only the last 2 of those days. Two sixths equals one third the same ratio, in a different frame of reference.

How old is Earth compared to the age of the entire universe?

A
The same age Earth and the universe formed together in the Big Bang
Universe: 13.8 bln yrs Earth: 13.8 bln yrs
Earth has existed for all of cosmic history
B
Earth formed 9.2 billion years after the universe began
← 9.2 bln yrs before Earth existed Earth ⅓ →
Universe: 13.8 billion years  ·  Earth: 4.54 billion years  ·  4.54 ÷ 13.8 = ⅓
C
Half the age Earth formed when the universe was about 7 billion years old
Before Earth (½) Earth (½)
Roughly in the middle of cosmic history

Cosmologists measure the universe at 13.8 billion years old, confirmed by cosmic microwave background radiation and the expansion rate of space. The Quran says everything heavens, Earth, and all that is between was created in 6 days measured at God's Throne (7:54, 50:38).
Earth its share of creation
4,600,000,000 years
Earth formed 4.54 billion years ago when our solar system coalesced from gas and dust. The Quran says Earth was created in 2 days (41:9). The universe had been in existence for 4 days before Earth appeared. That makes Earth's share 2 out of 6 exactly one third.

In Throne-days: 2 ÷ 6 = ⅓  ·  In Earth years: 4.54 ÷ 13.8 = ⅓
The Quran expressed it as a ratio correct in any frame of reference.

The Quran says the entire creation took 6 Throne-days. Earth was created in 2 of those days. What fraction of the universe's existence has Earth been present for?

A
All 6 days Earth was present from the very beginning of creation
Earth existed before the heavens were formed
B
The last 2 days out of 6, in which the Earth has existed
2 ÷ 6 = ⅓ · The same fraction as 4.54 billion ÷ 13.8 billion
C
Half Earth appeared at the midpoint of creation on day 3
Equal time before and after Earth's formation

The Quran's 2-out-of-6 ratio matches the measured ages of Earth and the universe to exact precision.

Why expressing it as a ratio matters: The universe's age is measured differently depending on the observer's speed and gravitational field (Einstein's relativity). An observer measuring the universe as 3 billion years old also measures Earth as 1 billion years old still one third. By expressing it as a ratio rather than absolute numbers, the Quran's statement is correct for every possible observer in every frame of reference.
The Christian Bible comparison: Genesis places the creation of Earth on day one making Earth the same age as the universe. Modern cosmology refutes this. The Quran places Earth's formation as beginning on the fourth day after four days of prior cosmic history which matches what cosmologists measure.
Summary and recap.
Cosmologists confirmed the 13.8-billion-year age of the universe in the 20th century. No human in 7th-century Arabia could have measured, calculated, or guessed that the correct ratio of Earth's age to the universe's age is precisely one third.
