Moving Mountains

For centuries, the idea that mountains could move was dismissed as a scientific blunder. The Quran stated it plainly 1,400 years before geologists proved it.

27:88 · Surah An-Naml
وَتَرَى الْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً وَهِيَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ ۚ صُنْعَ اللَّهِ الَّذِي أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ
"You see the mountains and think them firmly fixed but they are moving like clouds. Such is the artistry of God, who perfects all things."
The Discovery
Mountains appear fixed the verse uses the word جَامِدَة, meaning "frozen in place," to describe that appearance. Then it immediately corrects it: they are moving. Plate tectonics, discovered in the 1960s, confirmed every mountain on Earth rides a drifting plate up to 100 mm per year.

The mountains are moving just as written.

The verse uses the word جَامِدَة "frozen, fixed" specifically to describe how mountains appear, then immediately contradicts it: "they are passing like clouds." A 7th-century author guessing about mountain behaviour would never phrase it this way. He would write that they are fixed full stop. The denial of the appearance is the unexpected, scientific part.

Clouds move because they ride an invisible current of air. Mountains move because they ride an invisible current of mantle material. The analogy is structurally accurate. No ancient geology text uses this comparison because until the 1960s, no one knew mountains moved at all.
