In approximately 5 billion years the sun will exhaust its hydrogen fuel and swell into a red giant expanding to 200 times its current size. At that scale it will consume Mercury, Venus, and Earth. Why a solar eclipse doesn't fit: An eclipse is brief and the moon never touches the sun it only appears aligned from Earth's perspective. The word وَجُمِعَ describes a permanent gathering, not a visual coincidence. The red giant engulfment is the only event in physics where the sun and moon are literally brought into the same body.

The Hadith and the red giant: The Prophet's statement that "the sun will be brought within one Mīl of people" is an additional description of extreme solar proximity. In the context of the red giant, the sun's surface extends to where Earth currently is far closer than any human experience.

Red giant stellar evolution was not understood until the 20th century. No human in 7th-century Arabia had any basis for predicting that the sun would eventually grow large enough to consume the planets around it.
